さいごの一つ

二年半ぐらい、私は日本のレストランで働いています。ケンタッキーに住んでいる日本人はそこにいつも晩ご飯を食べに来ます。そうして、私はたくさん日本人のテーブルにちゅうもんをとまります、よく日本の会社員は「とよた」で働いていて、私たちのレストランに来て、五つ、六つぐらい小さい皿をちゅうもんします。二時間ぐらい、こんなお客様はビールを飲んで、仕事や家族やケンタッキーについて話しますが、それでもたいていそんな小さい皿はまだ会社員たちの前にあって、いつも一つだけ何かのこっています。誰もたべません。新しく注文する時は、その最後の一つをたべますが、その一つのために会社員たちはたたかいます！一時間に、私は五枚ぐらい皿を持っていきますが、その人はいつもたたかっています。そして、一人はその最後の一つをたべたら、わたしはそのあいている皿を、キチンにもって帰ります。やっと食べたと思って空いている皿をキチンにもってかえります。テーブルにもどると、寿司かさしみもりあわせを会社員たちはよくちゅうもんします。六時間ぐらいアペタイザをたべた後、さいごに、会社員は晩ご飯をちゅうもんしてくれます。たいてい、日本人の会社員はたくさんビールを飲みますが、よっぱらいません。アメリカ人はふとっていますから、あまりえんりょうしていません。それからアメリカ人のごはんのマーナより日本人のマーナのほうがいいと思います、そしてこの日本人の会社員はたいてい私の一番好きなお客様です。私の発表を聞いてくれてありがとうございました。さようなら。

The Last Piece

For the last two and a half years, I have worked at a Japanese restaurant. The Japanese who live in Kentucky always come for dinner. Therefore, I serve a lot of Japanese people. A lot of the Japanese businessmen work at Toyota, then come into our restaurant and order five or six small plates. For about two hours, these businessmen will drink beer, talk about things like jobs, family, and Kentucky, but those small plates are still right in front of them. There is always a single piece left. Nobody eats it. When they want to put in another order, they’ll eat the last piece, but they’ll fight over it. In an hour, I will take about five plates, and they’ll always be fighting over it. Then, if someone eats that last piece, I’ll take the empty plate to the kitchen. ‘They finally ate it’, I think while I take it back. When I get back to the table, the businessmen always order sushi or sashimi moriawase. After about four hours of eating appetizers, they will give me their order for dinner. Usually, these Japanese businessmen will drink a lot of beer, but they never get drunk. Americans are usually overweight, so they don’t often refrain from eating the last piece. Therefore, I think Japanese table manners are better than American table manners. Its because of that, that the Japanese businessmen are often my favorite customers.
